WVMEA NEWS BULLETIN AND HOLIDAY CLOSURE (December 22, 2022)
The News & Views – December 2022 bulletin was shared with WVMEA Members. The office will close for the Holiday Season from Monday December 26, 2022 through Monday January 2, 2023.
BARGAINING UPDATES (November 17, 2022)
The WVMEA provided members with Bargaining Updates. Separate News bulletin’s were shared with each bargaining unit, School Board members and Library, Police, Municipal members. Please contact the WVMEA office if you did not receive this correspondence.
LIBRARY, MUNICIPAL AND POLICE CIVILIANS – CALL FOR PROPOSALS (September 9, 2022)
The current Municipality, Library and Police Department Collective Agreements expire on December 31, 2022. The WVMEA contacted Library, Municipal and Police Members for input prior to beginning negotiations with a Call for Proposals Notice . Please contact the WVMEA office if you are a member and have not received the call for proposals forms.
RIGHT TO REFUSE UNSAFE WORK (September 8, 2022)
The WVMEA sent an important Health and Safety Bulletin to all members highlighting the WorkSafeBC amendments to the Right to Refuse Unsafe Work. Changes will now require employers to provide written notice of an unresolved work refusal to any worker subsequently assigned or allowed to perform that work, and to provide written notice of reassignment to the joint health and safety committee or a union representative.
WINNERS OF THE 2022 SCHOLARSHIPS (September 8, 2022)
This year the Executive Board awarded two Academic Scholarships and one Visual Arts Scholarship m of $2000 each. A Scholarship Notice was sent to all members announcing the winners.
BCFED ANNOUNCES BOYCOTT OF OPEN ROAD AUTO GROUP LTD (July 6, 2022)
The BC Federation of Labour asks members of its affiliated unions and the public, to respect the picket lines at Mercedes Benz Surrey and not to do business with the location. Click here for more details regarding this boycott.
THE WVMEA BECOMES A BC FED AFFILIATE (June 6, 2022)
On June 6, 2022 the WVMEA received a Certificate of Affiliation with the BD Federation of Labour. The BC Federation of Labour has a long and strong history of supporting all working people, representing over 500,000 members from affiliated unions across the country.
5 PAID SICK DAYS FOR ALL CASUAL AND TEMPORARY STAFF (May 5, 2022)
Amendments to the Employment Standards Act stipulate that as of April 1, 2022, all casual and temporary employees are entitled to 5 paid sick days per each calendar year. The WVMEA sent a Municipal Memo and School Board Memo to members (via email) to ensure that everyone is informed. Any questions regarding the 5 paid sick days may be directed to the WVMEA office.

LIBRARY, MUNICIPAL AND POLICE CIVILIAN MEMORANDUM OF AGREEMENTS (October 20 , 2022)
Memorandum of Agreements were signed maintaining terms of the 2017-2020 Collective Agreements with amendments as specified in each Memorandum. The new Agreements are effective from January 1, 2021 to December 21, 2022.
